  • Born April 8, 1944 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Attended primary and secondary schools in Grand Rapids and later attended the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan and obtained a Bachelor of Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering in 1966.
  • Served in the United States Navy. Qualified in nuclear submarines and nuclear engineering from 1966 to 1971.
  • Post graduate training in Bioengineering, 1971, at the University of Michigan Graduate School of Engineering.
  • Medical School, University of Michigan, 1972 to 1976. Graduated with Doctor of Medicine in 1976.
  • Internship, St. Mary’s Hospital, Orthopedic Surgery, surgeon residency program, 1976 to 1980.
  • Active staff privileges at Spectrum Health, St. Mary’s Hospital, Mary Free Bed, Kent Community Hospital and Metro Health Hospital.
  • Affiliations: Kent County Medical Society, Michigan State Medical Society, American Medical Association, active membership, and Michigan Orthopedic Society.
  • Licensed to practice medicine, M.D., State of Michigan since July, 1977.
  • Practice strictly limited to orthopedic surgery. In practice with Randy Lovell, M.D. and Peter Ugolini, M.D. at Michigan Street Orthopedic Specialists, P.C. (formally known as Bereza and Lovell Orthopedics, P.C.).
  • Diplomat of American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, having successfully met requirements of the Board, September 11, 1981. Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, February, 1983.
